Third Avenue Garage Wins IPI’s Best Parking Facilty Restoration

The International Parking Institute (IPI) Conference was held in New Orleans at the end of May and DESMAN was honored with the IPI Award of Excellence for Best Parking Facility Rehabilitation or Restoration for the Third Avenue Garage Restoration Project for the Public Parking Authority of Pittsburgh. Patrick Wells (PA/OH) accepted the Award during the ceremony on the last day of the conference.

The Third Avenue Garage is a 600-parking space, six level structure consisting of cast-in-place conventionally reinforced concrete floor slabs supported by cast-in-place conventionally reinforced concrete beams and columns. The DESMAN Team developed a 14-month repair program from a comprehensive structural condition survey that was performed. This extensive renovation was the focus of the largest capital repair project that DESMAN has ever done.

A special note about this project is that customer demand required that no more than 200 spaces be removed from service at any one time as traffic in non-construction zones continued uninterrupted. A nearby dormitory also required the garage to remain functional and that each day’s construction be concluded by 10:00pm. A hydro process was utilized to demo the slabs as it was quieter and created much less dust.

DESMAN was the Architect and Structural Engineer along with Nathan Contracting.

DESMAN key personnel include: Matt Repasky (OH), Project Manager; Ed DeTullio (OH), Project Engineer; Dan Corrigan (OH), Technician/Draftsmen; Dennis Williams (IL), Project Architect
